Auckland Half Ironman - April the 5th 2008

After a 2 week rest from the crash in IMNZ I started running on grass and aqua jogging to get back into the swing of racing my coach and me decided to do Auckland Half Ironman to prepare for my races coming up in America.

My training had been going pretty well and I was starting to feel good again and went to the race with a bit of confidence that I could win.

My main competition would come from Duncan Milne who placed 8th at Ironman NZ. I went hard from the gun the sea was like glass and made for fast swim times. I lead out of the water and put the pedal to the metal I was riding well then at 20 my aerobar pad snapped off I had to laugh but could rest my arm on the base bar and stay as smooth as I could.

My plan was to hold Duncan off to the Turn around at least but when he caught me a couple of k from the turn I knew it was going to be hard to stay with him he was riding very smooth. I hoped that he would only get a minute or two tops, but when I got back to T2 and heard that it was over 3mins I knew the race was for 2nd then.

I ran well for how much I had done since my crash and Duncan continued to extend his lead.
I was very pleased with my 2nd place finish in 4h.14mins and knew there was a lot of hard work ahead and was very focused and pumped up for the season ahead.
