Ironman New Zealand - March 1st 2008

We’ll after my longest build up to an Ironman in year I was looking forward to kicking off the Triathlon season of 2008 on a good result.

I had been training with Bjorn Andersson for about 6 weeks and he had pushed me to new pain levels on the bike so I knew that I would be in great shape after the swim and ride just the marathon to deal with!

My race started off as planed I had been swimming fast in training so I took it out super fast and lead for the 1st 600mts I had dropped all the main contenders in that short space of time. I was joined by Kieran Doe and Peter Jacobs, we were really throwing down the pace holding around 1.10’s per 100mts!
I sat on the back of the group for around 1200mts and then when went to come to the front to win the swim I realized that Kieran had gaped us by about 20mts so had to settle for 2nd out but in 45mins it was quick just some 12sec’s off the record.

My transition to the bike was quick and set about trying to bridge up to Kieran and ride with him but he was having none if it and decided to attack all the way!  At the 45k mark I was 45seconds behind had Peter in tow and then the group of the main contenders of 6 was gaining a little bit so at around 60k I backed off and the group caught us.

I felt pretty good and they were traveling at a fast pace so was ready to stick with them we split a little bit coming into Taupo for the 1st time and I was a little cold as rain had started to fall pretty hard. At the special needs collection at 95k I was behind a few of the group picking my special needs bag up and then with no time to react a water bottle rolled out into my path and I hit it with the back of my bike and wheel going down very hard.

The addriline was pumping and I got up tried to get going with gears slipping and my nutrition on the road I fired up and was back on the bike bloody and sore. After riding another 40k it was just excruatating to turn the pedals and when I saw Bjorn and being miles behind I pulled out.
There would have been no way I could have run a marathon!!

A couple of day’s later I got a X-ray and found that I had a hairline fracture in my Femur and it would not have been good if I had tried to run a Marathon on that.

So hoping that my luck changes and I can nail an Ironman again soon.

Thanks for all your support!
