St Croix 70.3 Ironman - 7th of May 2006

First 2006 Northern Hemisphere Race - St Croix 70.3 Ironman

Dear Sponsors and Friends

I have just competed in the first of my northern Hemisphere races. Coming to the Caribbean Island of St Croix after 35 hours of traveling I arrived here on Tuesday the 2nd in the best shape I have been in this early after training on the Gold Coast of Australia for the last 4 weeks.
The week leading up to the race I felt really good but was having trouble sleeping and getting used to the time zone. I was given race number #13 and it was to be very unlucky as riding to the transition race morning I lost my spare tire. Not letting it stress me too much I went about getting prepared for the race start.

My swim went pretty much to plan and I came out with the leaders. I nearly had a fall mounting the bike as Bryce dropped a bottle getting onto his bike and stopped dead to pick it up right in front of me. I felt pretty good on the bike and got into the grove but Cameron made a break with Burt and I sort of missed it but then broke from the pack at 25k to try and join the other 2 and then my bad luck struck again. I heard a loud bang and 2 spokes had broken on my front wheel. I stopped and took the broken spokes out and was caught by the group again. The roads here in St Croix are very rough so I was preying that no more spokes would break as the wheel was out of true, rubbing against my brakes and hard to control.

I managed to hang in and come off the bike in 4th hoping my legs would come right but as soon as I hit the run it was like I was sleep walking. I tried to push but couldn't lift my pace. The finish couldn't come fast enough and I know that for the next race I will be in the time zone and ready for vengeance! Thanks for all your support.
