Pucon Half Ironman, Chile - 22nd of January 2006

First Race For 2006 - Pucon, Chile.

Dear Sponsors and Friends

I had a short build up to my first race of 2006 after a very long 2005 left me very tired. Training comprised of 3 weeks in San Diego as it was closer to where I had to go and I was also preparing my base for later in 2006.

I headed down to South America on the Tuesday and after a day of traveling I arrived in Pucon Chile at around midday Wednesday feeling pretty relaxed and ready to get the first race of the season underway. The setting in Pucon Chile is unbelievable and very much like Queenstown, New Zealand.

Race week went fast and I hadn’t settled into the time zone very well and to make it worst I got an upset stomach on the Saturday, which gave me the runs!! I felt a little depleted come Sunday race morning and I new that this Half was going to hurt a lot. The swim start was fast as usual and myself, Chris McCormack and Brazils (3rdPlace) gapped the field. We didn’t pull away as much as we usually and Chris was happy to sit in with us only having around 1.30 minutes on the next group.

I got on the bike and knew straight away that I was going to struggle as I had no gas and felt as flat as a pancake. I got passed by Oscar going super fast and then Cam Widdoff and was on my own until the first turn. Then on the way back 5k from turning to do the second loop I was caught by a group, which had Pete V, Christian Boustos and also Ken Glar. They weren’t riding any faster so I picked it up a bit to stay with them. With about 25k to ride I started to feel a little better and thought I could have a shot at 5th or 6th place.

Onto the run I felt really good for the first lap and hung with Christian and Pete but they slowly pulled away and I was just hanging on to stop my body falling apart. I managed to come in 9th place, which wasn’t too bad for the way I felt.
