Ironman Western Australia - 27th of November 2005

Another Long Day At The Office - Ironman Western Australia.

Dear Sponsors and Friends

On Sunday the 27th of November I completed Ironman WA in 4TH place in a time of 8h 34m 26sec. I was happy that the 2005 Triathlon year had come to a close but bitterly disappointed that I had let a broken seat post bolt cost me a Podium or even another Ironman Victory. In what has been an outstanding Triathlon year for me with only 2 long course races not finishing in the top 3 Podium - super consistent for myself.

I had good preparation going into the race but had been very busy with my Brothers wedding and also being named 2005 Taupo Sportsman of the Year. So things were hectic before I left for Perth but I was super motivated to try and win.

My Race day started well as the swim was rough and I knew this would suit my surf background I lead most of the swim and wished others had pushed the pace, had a super fast transition to try and create the break on the bike which I was successful in doing then at 20k disaster struck. I heard a loud creak and pop sound and realised that my bolt holding my seat post in place had snapped!!

Then the seat started to slip and move around I was losing power and speed. First Luke McKensie and then Pete Jacobs passed me and I was worried. Next I was caught buy the bunch which I had wanted to get away from so I hung tough and didn't let them ride away but they were not riding hard enough and I stayed at the front to push the pace but we were getting ridden down by Mitch who I knew was the biggest threat. When he pasted I couldn't go with him and knew that may be the race. He built a 8 min gap and that was going to be to much for us I ran really well breaking 3hr for the 3rd time this year and was hampered by the timing chip cutting deep into my heal filling my shoe with Blood. I was annoyed with Eneko and Mathias as they didn't do much work on the bike helping gave them the fastest 2 run splits of the day.

All up it has been a fantastic 2005 season, I'm looking for bigger and better things to come in 2006!! Watch this SPACE!!! Thank you to all my sponsors and supporters out there. I'm now having a break before I start up for the New Year!!
