Desaru Half Ironman, Malaysia - 17th of September 2005

Another Race Another Podium Finish - Desaru, Malaysia.

Dear Sponsors and Friends

Well I'm sorry that this report has taken me so long to do but I have had no internet access while I get set up here on the Gold Coast of Australia. On the 17th of September I raced the Desaru International Half Ironman - a race that I won and set the record at in 2004. It was on my way to Australia so it was good to pick up a race along the way, the only trouble being that I had just completed the Half Ironman UK the week before so I was hoping that nobody would show up. But not a chance with World Champion Chris McCormack and his training mates turning up.

I knew I was in trouble as I forgot that the race was on Saturday not the usual Sunday. oh well it was like a Holiday with a race thrown in. It started at 10am in the oppressive Malaysian sun and heat with the swim was the coolest and easiest part of the day. I exited right on Chris’s heels with Boyd Conrick and Ben Harley in Tow. Macca went on the attack straight away and had a fast transition and sprinted away on the bike as I tried to muster enough energy to stay with him but just couldn't match his pace and was caught by Boyd and Ben we rode together until at 25k Ben dropped off the pace. 1ST Lap down and we had lost 2mins to Chris on the 2nd we picked it up and gained a bit of time and Chris saw this and really put the hammer down to open the gap to 7mins off the bike I was second only 20sec ahead of Boyd.

I knew that if I could run steady in this heat anything could happen. I started well but felt terrible with so much recent racing; Boyd caught me at 3k and pulled away. I wanted the pain to end then but kept pushing along and at 7k Boyd was walking and I caught up to him but then at 14k I was done. My legs had given up and I was nearly walking it was super hot and I wanted to stop but kept pushing to get to the finish line as quickly as I could!! I managed to finish 3rd which was great as Boyd had been training with Chris in Kona Hawaii for 4 weeks before the race so was really well prepared for it.

Race Results:
  1. Chris McCormack 4:01
  2. Boyd Conrick 4:08
  3. Bryan Rhodes 4:10
  4. Ben Harley 4:27
  5. Matt Stevens 4:32
Kind Regards - Bryan Rhodes
