I have just completed the MedExpress Mountaineer Half Ironman in Morgantown West Virginia. On the Hottest day (97F) since the summer of 2002 the First New Half Ironman, put on by HPF Racing, got underway with only 7 Pro Men but a strong field with Luke Bell of Australia and myself. Wearing wetsuits in a warm 74F water I knew people would get hot so took the first 1000 metres easy then went hard in the last 1000 to have a 15 second cap on Luke. It was going to be a Battle between him and myself the entire race and as I lead the bike Luke tried to go hard past but I felt good and climbed and descended better than him.

Late into the bike he broke a spoke in his front wheel so I put the hammer down and got a minute lead onto the run. Knowing Luke would charge hard at me and I had to get to the 7mile turn around first as it was all downhill from there. He had closed to 15 seconds and I just hammered down the hill as hard as I could and he blew up as I managed to put time on him every mile to win in a Time of 4hr 10min. Luke came in second 5minutes later in 4hr 15mins and Paul Fritzsche was 3rd.

I now head back to New Zealand to meet with my new Coach and map out my plan for Long course Worlds early August in Europe. My year is getting better every race and I have so much belief in my ability to win a World Title.
