Eagleman Half Ironman, USA - 12th June 2005

A Podium Finish At Eagleman, USA.

Dear Sponsors and Friends

I just want to let you all know how my latest race went after just over a Month of Training in Boulder, Colorado. I'm feeling the benefits of Altitude Training.

The race in Blackwater is a challenge in getting there and also competing with temperatures in the late 90's. However, it suited me as I like it as Hot as!! The race started a little stressful as at the Pro meeting they said there would defiantly be no wetsuits then with 20mins before the start of the race they said that Pro could use wetsuits as the Temperature had been remeasured at 72.

I had left mine back at my homestay's and with no time to go back and get it had to borrow one. This is never a good option but it fitted ok despite being very tight around the neck. I still managed the best swim to lead out of the water in 25mins.

On the bike Luke Bell went straight on the charge and I was riding as hard as I could to stay close. In tow I had Luke McKenzie and he wasn't helping. At the 35 mile mark Viktor Zyemtsev came flying by and I tried to lift it to stay with him. I came into transition in 3rd and Victor was still there.

I exited hot on his heals and knew I would have to run my best to stay with him. He pulled away and was running faster than Luke Bell while I was struggling with cramps in my left leg from the flat bike. I had Luke M pass me at 3 miles then both Travis and Todd at around 4 miles.

So at the turn around 1/2 way into the run I was in 6th place but things were better I was striding out and felt great. The temperature had risen and I was coming back at the guy's in front of me. At Mile 9 I caught a struggling Luke M and then lifted it to catch and pass Travis and Todd at Mile 11 then push as hard as I could to the finish. I was actually catching Viktor as he had blown up but I just ran out of road.

I now have a 2 more races in America before I head home to New Zealand for some sports testing and then onto I.T.U World Long Distance Championships.
