St Croix Half Ironman, USA - 1st May 2005

Dear Sponsors and Friends

Well after a week of light training and getting into the North American time zone I felt really good coming into the bigger race of my campaign, the St Croix Half Ironman.

Race morning dawned very windy with light showers and a lot cooler than in past years. It was a really choppy swim which suited me coming from a surf lifesaving background. I came out of the water in 4th place and felt great on the bike to catch the 2 guys up the road quickly and be in the lead on the bike pushing the pace.

There were 13 other guys that had closely exited the water and it formed into a bunch where nobody was getting away. Some of the guys disregarded the rules and were blatantly drafting and I knew this was going to reflect in the overall results.

I started the run fast but put socks on to stop blistering and a few of the guy's that didn't were up the road a little and I couldn't close the cap. I ran really well and was in 5th for most of it and battling with Tim Deboom until I cramped and lost a couple of places. The race went well considering how it paned out and was happy with the result.
