Ironman Hawaii - 16th October 2004

Ironman World Championships Hawaii, 16th September 2004

Dear Sponsors and Friends

This is what went down for me at the World Championships. I was second out of the water and felt really good. It was easy at the front and I did a lot of the work. I really felt good but had trouble getting my Bike Gear Bag.

Then the race was over really - not knowing that I had mounted my bike before my back wheel was over the Duct tape I received the very first penalty of the World Champs. They gave it to me when the lead Moto bike officially caught up to me at around 6-8miles into the bike.

I was screaming at him that I had not drafted but he forced me over to tell me I had mounted the bike a second to early and it cost me any chance at the top 10 as I watched the lead group ride away.

I was nearly in tears but got back on just to see if I could ride well and rode the rest of the course on my own. I managed to work myself into the top 25 off the bike but had to sit in the penalty box for 4 more minutes.

At this point my lower back started to cramp and seize up. After only 5 1/2 miles into the run every step I was taking was like there was a knife being driven into my back. I had pinched a nerve and was taken to the medical tent to end my race for 2004. Totally upset and disappointed as I really felt great up to the point of having to get off the bike for the harsh penalty.

Thanks for your time and support - it has been really rough on me and I can't understand my luck. I have never been so prepared for the worlds to have it come crashing down around me.

Kind Regards - Bryan Rhodes
